Participation in the “Rade propre Cherbourg” operation for the TREASURE project
26 September 2024
Cedre was involved in various events in September for the TREASURE project, with first of all, on 9 September, the first workshop for the co-construction of a local action plan to reduce plastic outflow into the Channel and North Sea, jointly organised by the project's French partners. The workshop, hosted by our partner Nausicaa in Boulogne-sur-Mer, was an opportunity to present the project and discuss possible solutions for reducing plastic pollution, their limitations and the need for support from the different stakeholders in the area.
Following this workshop, Cedre visited 5 ports along the Channel and North Sea coast (Boulogne-sur-Mer, Dieppe, Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, Granville and Saint Malo) to tour the ports and interview various port stakeholders in order to understand the sources of plastic pollution and their impacts, as well as the equipment and best practices deployed. A second mission was then organised at the end of September to visit the ports of Saint Quay Portrieux and Chantereyne in Cherbourg.
This second trip coincided with the “Rade Propre” (“clean roadstead”) operation organised on 26 September by the Maritime Prefecture for the Channel and North Sea. This annual operation aims to remove litter from the seabed of the Cherbourg roadstead to clean up the marine environment. In total, more than 115 items of waste were brought to the surface at the various sites, including bicycles, tyres, abandoned traps and pots and even a hoverboard.
