MAR-ICE service expands to Mediterranean and Black Sea

March 2025

The MAR-ICE (Marine Intervention in Chemical Emergencies) service established by European Maritime Safety Agency provides essential assistance in the event of a chemical emergency at sea.

Via MAR-ICE, created through close cooperation between EMSA, Cedre and Cefic, any beneficiary State can contact Cedre's 24/7 emergency team to obtain information within one hour on HNS, the potential hazards for people and the environment, the product's behaviour in the marine environment, and the recommended equipment for responders. The MAR-ICE service can also be activated for maritime safety exercises.

This service has been available to European Union Member States and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) coastal States since 2008. On 1st January 2025, as part of European projects SAFEMED, BCSEA and IPA, MAR-ICE was opened up to the following countries: Albania, Algeria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Egypt, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Moldova, Morocco, Montenegro, Palestine, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine and Serbia.
