The tanker Giuseppe Giuletti was travelling from Sardinia to Lisbon when it was abandoned by its crew following the flooding of the machine room.

The 28 crew members were rescued by the motor boat Kathe Bros. The tanker sank off Cape St. Vincent a few hours later, spilling 26,000 tonnes of diesel and fuel oil into the sea.
