MANIFESTS Genius: blow out simulation at Cedre and impact study

4 to 8 November

As part of EU MANIFESTS Genius project, which seeks to improve the response capacities of marine pollution responders to volatile HNS spills, subsurface gas release tests were performed in Cedre’s test tank.

The aim was to simulate a blow out caused by a gas leak from a subsea pipeline in order to:

1) assess the consequences of a blow out at the surface (wave height, surface currents generated by the gas bubbles),

2) detect the gas cloud using IR cameras

3) test the effectiveness of a water curtain against this cloud (again using IR cameras).

These tests were carried out in collaboration with IMT Mines d'Alès, with injections of nitrogen, carbon dioxide, methane and ammonia. The Finistère fire brigade (SDIS 29) also took part in deploying the water curtain against the methane and ammonia clouds.
