On 7 October 1970, a heavy storm caused a breach in the hull of Anastasia J. L., resulting in the flooding of the machine room. The 33 crew members abandoned the vessel and reached safety as the tanker was sinking.

The shipwrecking led to the spillage of 18,500 tonnes of oil 360 nautical miles off the coast of Azores.
