Pollutant analysis

We are one of the few laboratories able to conduct emergency fingerprinting and analysis 24/7 to identify and quantify oil and chemicals.

Oil characterisation

We can characterise an oil from two points of view:

  • physical characterisation: flash point, density and viscosity
  • chemical characterisation: asphaltene, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and paraffin contents.

This type of analysis is often a prelude to a study on the product's behaviour when spilled in water.

Identifying the spill source

Using our equipment, we are able to analyse oil samples taken in the environment to identify their origin for operational purposes, but also legal purposes as in the case of the Prestige oil spill. In this respect, Cedre is part of the Bonn Agreement oil spill identification network OSInet which comprises different laboratories around the world and which organises an annual oil analysis intercalibration exercise. This facilitates the exchange of information, harmonises practices and tests new cases.

Measuring the level of contamination in the environment

Our laboratory is also equipped to measure the quantity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and pesticides in different matrices:

  • oil products
  • water
  • sediment
  • biological tissue.
