Never again!

Everybody agreed that such an oil spill could never happen again, thanks to the new Polmar plan (response plan for accidental marine pollution) which was set up.

TA sea traffic lane was created off Ushant island, forcing vessels transporting hazardous materials to sail no less than 50 km from coasts. A powerful high tide tug boat was permanently allocated to provide assistance in the lane. At the Préfecture Maritime de l'Atlantique and the MRCC Corsen, duty officers are ready to take action 24/7 in the event of an incident.

However, these efforts failed to prevent those of the Gino, Tanio, Amazzone, Erika, and Prestige. But the risk was foreseen and a specialised technical centre was set up to ensure a permanent technical watch and give operational advice in case of an emergency: the centre was named Cedre, set up in Brest and is available 24/7 in the case of a pollution.
