Based on the observation that the authorities are often poorly prepared to handle chemical spills, the HNS-MS (Harmful Noxious Substances-Marine System) project aims to develop a crisis management decision support system able to be activated by the maritime authorities and MRCCs (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres) within the Bonn Agreement area. This system will be designed to model the drift of chemicals at sea as well as to study their fate, i.e. their transfer in the water column and atmosphere and their persistence at the water surface. Thus, in the event of a spill, operational teams will be able to anticipate the extent of the spill and define the strategic decisions to be implemented.
